2020 Sector Observations

Since the beginning of the Coronavirus, there’s been much speculation about which businesses will recover, which will falter, and to what degree. Now, six months in, we’re taking an in-depth look at the price performance and overall health of U.S. equities.

This analysis by our research team focuses on sectors of the U.S. economy to measure the impact of the pandemic and the results of this year’s monetary stimulus.

In compiling this research we observed….

  • Few sectors have been able to maintain growth. Nearly every sector has reported shrinking profits.

  • Five companies in the S&P 500 now account for 22.6% of the index - with technology representing nearly 31%.

  • Tech is the only sector holding more cash than debt.

  • Dividends and buybacks have been led by tech and finance companies with Apple and Microsoft combined returning nearly 20% of all capital returned by publicly traded companies.

  • The automotive and hospitality sectors have raised more debt than airlines.

We hope you find this information to be valuable and invite you to send any questions you may have to jonathan.ting@miradorcp.com
